Nefertiti Queen of Egypt WIP by TheSatanicNun Nefertiti Queen of Egypt WIP by TheSatanicNun

UPDATE:
The painting process is getting closer and closer to the finished product.

I am pretty pleased with the outcome so far, even though it is not yet finished. I still have some work to do on the hat and the skin. The hardest part, except from the hat, has been to get the right skin tone and shape of the cheeks.

The right part of the ear looks pretty weird at the moment, but now worries. I am planning on changing it to make it look less creepy.

I am planning on making a coloured version of this picture as well.

Please, feel free to give me your opinion about this painting and how I can improve it.

I actually really like the smoothness of the surfaces, but when you do add textures alongside the hard edges, it's going to look brilliant!

I'm having a small break from that painting because I feel kinda stuck, but I hope to be able to finish it some day and make all the improvements that you suggest! :)

Nice work! Would love to see the coloured version!
Yes, it looks like a basic 3D-Rendering. Maybe if you ad some texture, some 'visual dirt' to the surface of the sculpture to make it look more like stone the effect will be better.
And a sidenote: Yes I know, it is like this on the original as well, but it's more that 'blind eye' that creeps me out! Maybe that goes away too, when the drawing looks more like a drawing of a sculpture.
But then again: Nice work!

Thank you! :)
I plan to try and add some more texture to it when I have gotten the right shades and highlights... I would want the face to look more human, and the hat to look more fabric like. I always over blend it, and yes, I have used the reference picture a little bit too much to make it look human, since it is in fact a ceramic bust... Still something I struggle with. I always make things too smooth. :(

But I read a Marta Dahlig tutorial about how to paint perfect skin and she had some tips & tricks for darker skin tones. I hope to be able to make it look a little bit more realistic. Also, I think that I might be able to make it look better if I colour it. Let's see how it turns out. I am still learning, but I am pretty pleased that I made it look, if not realistic, then at least quite nice. :)

Thank you for your comments, it is really nice to get feedback. I will think about them and try and put them into my final piece :)

It sounds like you have to decide what kind of picture you want. A lifelike portait of Nefretiti? Then go for a human look (PLEASE add the second eye) with a hat that is made of fabric and a convincing skin, real eyes etc.. Or should it be a picture of the actual bust? Then make it clear that it is an old painted sculpture made of stone and missing the second eye.
If you do it as a real portrait I have one advise (if it isn't already in the tutorial you read): the most important color for painting a convincing skin tone is ... blue! No perfect skin tone without some shades of blue! The blue comes from the veins underneath the skin. The thinner (and brighter) the skin, the more blue. Just look at the old masters: Rubens and Velazquez painted beautiful skin tones!

Whatever you do, I'm curious what the finished painting will look like.
Keep painting! I'm looking forward to see more from you! :-)

Well I will experiment a little bit about how I want the Nefertiti to look like. Thank you for yor advice :)

My biggest problem for now is that I cannot seem to find a good method to colour the picture. The colour mode on the layer looks really really weird :S

Haha, I've had the same problems! :-) Actually, I'm a novice in the field of digital painting as well. I started about a year and a half ago and I actually started my deviantART-account just for presenting my digital works. So you can actually see my progress when bowsing my gallery. I learned that I had to change my technique when moved from pen and paper (or brushes and canvas) to digital.
Not so long ago I tried your technique as well and I did a grayscale-version first to be coloured later on, but the colouring wasn't satisfying so I finished it black and white. I'm working on a piece right now which I'm hoping to finish in the next days that uses the same technique again, but colouring the grayscale with a separate layer in 'colouring mode' was just a step inbetween and I painted on top of that with new layers in 'normal mode'. That worked for me.
With every piece I'm learning and trying new things and that's what I find so rewarding about going digital.

My posts are getting longer and longer and I'm sorry for that. I hope, they don't bore or even upset you. But I have the impression that we are on the same journey right now. :-)

I feel so stressed about the fact that I am not able to draw my own characters. I always need a photo as a reference, and so far I have always traced the lines to be able to paint them, but of course I haven't made any over paintings, but I have used the photo next to me at all times.

Yesterday I tried to copy a photo but without tracing. I divided the whole image into squares and then I tried to match my painting with the original. It was quite hard and I didn't get a very satisfying result, but I did better than I thought I would do! I didn't finish the painting that was meant to be a speed painting, but still... I think it is the way I need to go now, to make me feel more comfortable about painting. I do want to feel that it is my OWN art... perhaps you know what I mean... :)
I will have to take baby steps since I am still not very good at picking colours myself, but I am trying to firstly chose my own colours from what I see at the picture and then I eyedrop the picture to see how far away I was from the truth...

Perhaps I should try and copy some old paintings, that would be a lot of fun I guess... I think that it would be a good idea to get away the "manic" about getting each proportion or shade 100% accurate. I'm sure that it wouldn't take as long for me if I just allowed myself to change something in the painting :)

I like your long posts, it is nice to talk to someone who is also learning. Feel free to share your thoughts and ideas with me! :)
I still haven't coped with my ipad though, so I'm gonna stuck to my intuos 5 for a little while (I love it) :)

Haha, yes it kinda looks like a 3D rendering. :D

I used a photo as a reference to trace the contours of the picture, because I am still not very good with proportions, and then I kept the photo next to me so that I would know where to put the high lights and shadows.

However, I am trying to learn how to make my own line arts and lightening but it isn't going too well atm so that is why I don't update that much.

Thank you very much! :)
I am using a photo of the bust which I traced for the proportions, because I am really bad with those!
But I loved painting in black and white when I painted my Marilyn portrait. I have also lost interest in so many projects lately because of all the problems with getting the right colours for the skin etcetera so I thought that I should just practise painting and blending. No better way than to use black and white! :)
I hope that it'll look nice when I am done! I am just going to need a good reference for the ear, because the bust is unfortunately broken.

You're very welcome :]

I understand how frustrating it is trying to get the right colors. I've never really been too go with painting in color myself. The great thing about painting in black and white is you can always paint over it with color after you've finished, whenever you want.

Good luck on finishing it! It's going to be awesome :]

Yes that was my plan. I might make a colour version of the painting once it is finished... I haven't coloured a black and white painting before, but I guess that I can figure it out somehow.

I am also thinking about if I should leave her left eye blank. The eye is damaged on the statue and I thought it would be a nice connection to the statue to make at least a blind eye there. Maybe I should have her ear chopped of as well. (No, just kidding) :)

:) Let's see how it goes.
I am working on the bases of ear atm. I used Tyra Banks ear as a reference, because to me it looks like the lightning is quite the same as on my Nefertiti reference... But the ear looks really really weird. I am not very good at painting those. (I updated the picture).

Anyway I guess I just have to keep trying :)
